![]() A nation that prays together comes together in strength and love. Now more than ever as Americans we need to come together and pray over our nation. In lieu of this occasion, the Interfaith Council believes “National Day of Prayer” is the perfect opportunity to take a moment anytime, anywhere, and pray over America and the people of our land. This year, however, the event needed to be canceled due to COVID-19. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.Įach year, locally, Laguna Beach Interfaith Council coordinates at Mission Hospital a breakfast to commemorate this day. A National Day of Prayer Committee was formed in 1972. Each year future presidents sign this proclamation. On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. During the Korean War there was a strong desirability in the country to have a united national prayer.
